What Stress and Cortisol Do to Working Memory

Mild stress sharpens arousal, but chronic stress and cortisol erode working memory. We review the Yerkes-Dodson curve and prefrontal-hippocampus findings.

Stress Isn't Always Bad

"Stress ruins memory" is only half true. With zero stress the brain is too sluggish to perform well, and with a moderate amount focus and performance actually improve. The oldest model describing this is the Yerkes-Dodson law, proposed in 1908: an inverted-U relationship where arousal that is too low or too high both hurt performance, and somewhere in between sits an optimum.

A little nervousness before an exam wakes the brain up. Heart rate ticks up slightly, attention narrows, and it becomes easier to lock onto the task in front of you. This isn't a malfunction — it's a physiologically designed response. The trouble starts only once arousal crosses past that "just right" point.

Why Chronic Stress Shakes Working Memory

Working memory is the ability to hold information briefly in mind while manipulating it — dialing a phone number you just heard, or holding an intermediate result while doing the next step of mental arithmetic. It relies mainly on the prefrontal cortex (especially the dorsolateral part) and the hippocampus working together.

When stress is intense or prolonged, the adrenal glands release cortisol. Cortisol itself is an essential hormone, but in the brain it tends to dampen neuronal activity in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus. The hippocampus in particular is dense with cortisol receptors, and when cortisol stays elevated for long periods, hippocampal plasticity drops and working-memory task performance declines — a finding reported consistently across studies.

For example, studies that artificially raise cortisol and then have participants do working-memory tasks (such as n-back) tend to show a meaningful drop in accuracy when cortisol is high. Effect sizes vary by task and individual, but the direction — "chronic high cortisol is bad for working memory" — is one that multiple meta-analyses and reviews have repeatedly confirmed.

Why Examinees and Presenters "Go Blank"

Almost everyone has had the experience of their mind going blank right before an exam or a talk. This isn't a lack of willpower; it's the result of over-arousal. When arousal climbs too high, attention shifts away from the task itself toward self-monitoring thoughts like "what if I mess this up?" The brain spends its working-memory capacity watching itself instead of solving the problem.

On top of that, over-arousal disrupts rehearsal — the implicit repetition that normally keeps information alive in your head. When arousal is too high, that rehearsal loop breaks and information evaporates quickly. That's why a number you just saw can vanish a second later.

It's Normal for Scores to Wobble

If you play Memory over several days, you'll notice your score swings fairly widely even though it's the same person. Yesterday you remembered 7 items; today only 4. Your brain didn't suddenly deteriorate. Maybe you slept poorly the night before, or heard bad news right before the test, or had too much coffee and your hands were shaking — that day's stress and arousal state is reflected directly in the score.

Working memory is less a "fixed stat" and more a function of your current state. So a single measurement isn't a meaningful way to declare "my memory is this good." It's far more useful to measure repeatedly under similar conditions across several days and look at the distribution. The variance itself is information.

What Helps Recovery

If chronic stress erodes working memory, recovery works in the opposite direction. The most consistently effective intervention is sleep. Cortisol drops during sleep and the hippocampus goes through its consolidation process, so working memory often rebounds noticeably the next day. Beyond that, slow breathing (such as 4-7-8 relaxation breathing) has been shown to calm the autonomic nervous system and lower arousal in the short term. Brief breaks, walks, and sunlight exposure also help — and they all share a common direction of lowering cortisol.
