The Digit Span Test — A Measurement Since 1887

The digit span test dates back to Jacobs in 1887 and lives on in the WAIS. We cover its forward/backward variants, average scores, and how this site's game differs.

1887: Jacobs Proposes the Test

The task of hearing digits and repeating them back — the digit span test — is older than you might think. In 1887 the British psychologist Joseph Jacobs first proposed it. His aim was to compare "memory" in schoolchildren, and digits seemed like a universal stimulus that would be less affected by education level or language differences.

The test went on to become a staple of intelligence testing. In the 20th century, David Wechsler included it in the WAIS (Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale), and digit span became one of the most widely administered memory tasks in the world. It appears not only in the WAIS but in the child-focused WISC and many neuropsychological batteries. It's a measurement that has survived over 130 years.

Two Variants: Forward and Backward

There are two variants of the digit span test.

They look similar, but they load the brain differently. Forward is mostly short-term memory — repeat what you heard. Backward requires holding the digits while simultaneously manipulating the order, so it's used as a heavier working memory task. In practice, backward scores come out shorter than forward.

What's the Average?

On the WAIS, the adult average for forward digit span sits roughly at 6 to 7 digits. Backward is shorter, around 4 to 5 digits. Numbers vary by study and edition, but they tend to move within this range.

One important condition: the WAIS digit span is an oral test that allows rehearsal. While the examiner reads the digits slowly, the test-taker can silently repeat them to hold on. As we saw in the 7±2 myth, rehearsal and chunking inflate apparent capacity. So a WAIS average of 6 to 7 doesn't mean pure capacity is 6 to 7 — it means "average when rehearsal is allowed."

Why This Site's Game Differs

The biggest difference is rehearsal time. In the WAIS, the examiner reads digits one by one, slowly, and you can repeat them in your head. In this game, digits flash all at once and you type them right away, leaving almost no room to rehearse. Because it's a visual short-term memory task, the 3 to 4 range is a more natural ceiling.

So you shouldn't judge your game score against the WAIS average of 6 to 7. If you hit 5 to 6 digits here, your underlying ability is likely "above average" by WAIS standards. The conditions differ, so rather than comparing across tests, watching "your own change under the same conditions" is more meaningful.

The Test Measures Capacity, Not All of Intelligence

Because digit span sits inside an intelligence test, a common misunderstanding arises: "Is this score basically IQ?" No.

Intelligence is multifactorial. Even in Wechsler's model it breaks down into verbal comprehension, perceptual reasoning, working memory, and processing speed. Digit span is one task within the working memory domain. Working memory isn't uncorrelated with intelligence, but a single task score can't define "this person's intelligence."

And digit span scores are influenced by chunking, rehearsal strategy, and familiarity with digits. Same capacity, better strategy, higher score. So the score doesn't cleanly reflect a "fixed brain ability" either. Seeing how chunking shifts the score makes this clearer.

In Short

The digit span test is a simple but long-lived measurement, started by Jacobs in 1887 and still in use after more than 130 years. It has forward and backward variants, and WAIS averages run around 6 to 7 forward and 4 to 5 backward. Those numbers come from an oral test that allows rehearsal, so they shouldn't be compared directly with this site's visual short-term memory game. And the score measures working memory capacity, not intelligence as a whole.
