Where "People Remember Seven Things" Came From
Whenever memory comes up online, one number tends to appear: "Human working memory holds 7±2 items." It shows up in slide decks, blog posts, even lecture notes, quoted almost like a law of physics. But if you trace where it came from, the story gets more complicated.
The source is George Miller's 1956 paper, "The Magical Number Seven, Plus or Minus Two: Some Limits on Our Capacity for Processing Information." With a title like that, it's easy to see why the number stuck. The problem is that what Miller actually wrote and what people later summarized are not the same thing.
What Miller Actually Said
Miller's paper bundled two different limits into one essay. One was the limit on absolute judgment along a single dimension, and the other was the limit on immediate memory span.
Absolute judgment is a task where you're shown a stimulus along one dimension — loudness, pitch, and so on — and asked to identify which level it is. People can distinguish roughly 6 to 7 levels before confusion rises sharply. Push beyond that and errors climb fast.
Immediate memory span is the classic task of repeating back a short list of items right after seeing them, like a digit span test. Here too, the average landed around 7. Miller noted the coincidence was possibly accidental but interesting.
The key point is that Miller did not declare "working memory capacity is 7±2 chunks." In fact, he ended with a warning against over-interpreting the number 7, and introduced the idea of chunking: the capacity is limited, but the amount of information packed into a single chunk can grow. That nuance got dropped as the number was passed along, and only "7±2" survived.
Modern Research Points to 4±1
In the decades after Miller, researchers tried to isolate working memory more carefully. The evidence piled up that pure capacity is smaller than 7.
The best-known summary is Nelson Cowan's 2001 review, "The Magical Number 4." Cowan estimated capacity under conditions designed to block rehearsal and chunking strategies, and landed at about 4±1 chunks for adults. In other words, "7±2" reflects a state where you're silently rehearsing the items or grouping them into meaningful bundles — not the raw amount the brain holds at once.
Visual short-term memory comes out even smaller. In tasks where items flash briefly and you enter them right away — say, dots on a screen whose positions you must click — the limit sits around 3 to 4 items. When you can't verbally rehearse what came in through your eyes, capacity shrinks.
So How Should You Read Your Game Score?
The 순간기억력 game on this site shows digits briefly and asks you to enter them. It leans on visual short-term memory, with little time to rehearse. So 5 to 6 digits is a normal score, and 7 or more is already quite good.
A common mistake is to beat yourself up: "7±2 means 7 digits should be average, right?" But as we saw, 7±2 is not pure capacity — it's capacity plus rehearsal and chunking. Under visual short-term memory conditions, 4-ish is the natural ceiling, so holding 5 to 6 digits reliably is already above average. There's no need to measure yourself against 7±2.

The Unit Is "Chunks," Not "Items"
To summarize: when we talk about working memory limits, the unit is the chunk, not the individual element. With the same capacity, bigger chunks mean a larger apparent capacity. That's why a digit span test is easier with numbers that form meaningful groups than with random digits.
